Meet Helen!

Helen was raised in Cedar Grove and graduated in 1957. While in school she was involved in band and choir. She played the piano, clarinet and marimba. She was the only one in school who played the marimba, which is a percussion instrument. Helen met her future husband, Howard, while in school but they didn't start dating until college. His constant whistling and friendliness is what drew Helen to him. The first time Howard asked her out she thought he was only coming over to talk to her to ask her to teach him the marimba.

Helen went to teacher's college and got a job at Oostburg Christian School. She taught 2nd grade and her favorite thing to teach was geography. Howard was a salesman. A perk to Howard's job was the need to travel. Helen was often able to join him on these trips. Some of the places they had traveled to include Hawaii, Mexica, Puerto Rico and Arizona. They also enjoyed taking family vacations with their children.

Helen has three children, two daughters and a son. Helen's family can very often be found in her room visiting. She has a large number of grand and great-grand children. Before moving to Pine Haven, Helen played a large part in our volunteer program. She played piano and helped in the Giddings Ave Corner Store for many years. She also volunteered at Good as New, Head Start, and provided baked goods for fundraisers. Helen has been a long time member of Bethel Church in Oostburg. She was involved with many things at church, including playing piano. While living at Pine Haven, Helen can often be found visiting with her family, attending church services, getting manicures, and bringing smiles to many faces.
